An evening of three illustrated talks exploring different aspects of Stoke Newington's past, organised by local historian Amir Dotan. Each 25-minute presentation is followed by a five-minute Q&A session.
The speakers cover: historic boundary markers scattered across the neighbourhood that mark parishes and districts long since reorganised; an ambitious but never-built deep air-raid shelter system proposed by engineer Oscar Faber in 1939 and what it reveals about wartime civilian protection; and the leasehold system's role in shaping property ownership, development and democracy in two contrasting 19th-century housing schemes.
All ticket proceeds support the Motor Neurone Disease Association in memory of John Baptiste George, who ran T. J. Electrics on Stoke Newington Church Street for 50 years and passed away in 2023. Previous events have raised £13,358 for charitable causes.
Friends of Hackney Archives will have a stall on site with membership information and publications available for purchase and donation.
