The Goethe-Institut London hosts the editors and translators of the new Oxford World's Classics editions of Thomas Mann's works. This launch event celebrates fresh translations of three major novels and two short story collections, alongside the recently released Mario and the Magician and Other Late Stories. For decades, British readers have relied on Helen Lowe-Porter's translations; these new versions offer contemporary renderings by accomplished translators.
Series editor Ritchie Robertson, retired Schwarz-Taylor Professor of German at Oxford, leads a panel including award-winning translators Iain Galbraith, Nicola Luckhurst and Simon Pare. Each shares insights into the translation process and the particular challenges of bringing Mann's twentieth-century German prose into modern English. The evening combines discussion of Mann's literary significance with an open question session.
Attendees can expect expert perspectives on one of literature's most important voices and the collaborative effort behind these definitive new English editions.
