This two-day professional course combines evidence-based training in two essential areas of respiratory physiotherapy: exercise and physical activity for advanced respiratory disease (Day 1), and airway clearance interventions for chronic respiratory conditions (Day 2). Participants may attend either day independently or both, gaining practical skills, current evidence, and expert clinical guidance to deliver safe, effective, person-centred respiratory care.
Day 1: Exercise and Physical Activity
Learn how exercise improves symptoms, functional capacity, and quality of life in advanced respiratory disease. The programme covers principles, assessment, and delivery of exercise interventions for complex conditions, exploring physiological considerations, safety strategies, and practical adaptation techniques. Expert-led sessions draw on leaders in respiratory and exercise science, featuring current research, emerging practices, and real-world clinical application in a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting.
Day 2: Airway Clearance
Explore the principles, assessment, and delivery of airway clearance interventions across clinical settings and patient populations. The course covers the physiological basis of secretion retention, indications and contraindications for different techniques, and practical strategies for tailoring treatments to individual needs. Current guidelines, research, traditional and emerging techniques are examined, with opportunities for case discussion and collaborative learning.
Format and Learning
The two-day in-person symposium comprises expert-led lectures, case-based discussions, practical sessions, and interactive Q&A. All participants receive an electronic certificate of attendance upon completion. The course is designed for respiratory and rehabilitation physiotherapists, respiratory physicians and consultants, GPs, specialist registrars, clinical exercise physiologists, nurses, clinical nurse specialists, occupational therapists, and allied health professionals involved in respiratory care.
