What makes everyday tasks feel so difficult? Charchita Mishra, a biomedical scientist in histology, explores the neuroscience behind why simple activities like replying to emails, washing up, or engaging in repetitive work can feel surprisingly draining. Drawing on insights from neuroscience, psychology, sport, literature and culture, this talk examines how our brains respond to boredom, monotony and sustained effort.
The discussion covers why minds gravitate towards novelty and stimulation, what happens when tasks feel unrewarding, and how discomfort can build psychological resilience. As instant solutions and AI become more prevalent in daily life, the talk also considers whether we are losing ordinary opportunities to practise patience and sustained attention. Rather than escaping boredom, participants will explore what it might offer and how to approach the less exciting parts of life with greater curiosity and intention.
No prior knowledge of neuroscience or psychology is needed—just curiosity and an interest in understanding everyday effort better.
