Theoretical physicist and president-elect of the International Science Council Robbert Dijkgraaf explores the Einstein Telescope, a groundbreaking gravitational wave detector set to begin operations in 2035. This talk examines the scientific significance of the instrument, the research frontiers it will unlock, and the international collaboration that makes such ambitious projects possible.
The telescope will rank among the most sensitive scientific instruments ever built, enabling researchers to test Einstein's general theory of relativity, search for dark matter, investigate the early universe, and deepen our understanding of black holes and neutron stars. Beyond its scientific promise, the Einstein Telescope exemplifies how cross-border cooperation in research can serve as a powerful tool for diplomacy and shared innovation.
Presented in collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands, this event is held at the Royal Institution, 21 Albemarle Street, London.
