Join us for a vibrant evening celebrating Bangali heritage through the ancient art of kantha stitching. This hands-on workshop brings together community, culture, and craft at East West Pizza in Shoreditch for the third instalment of The Bangali Story.
Kantha is a traditional embroidery form that emerged in rural Bengal, where intricate running stitches transformed discarded cloth into treasured heirlooms passed down through generations. Today it remains deeply significant to Bangali communities worldwide. Led by textile experts Sukhwinder Sagoo-Reddy and Jhinuk Sarkar (lecturers at University of Arts London and Camberwell College of Arts), this interactive session will explore the history and cultural identity of kantha while teaching you the fundamentals of the craft.
The evening unfolds as follows: welcome and dinner (6:30pm-7:00pm), poetry (7:00pm), kantha workshop (7:05pm-8:15pm), a Bangali dance performance (8:00pm), and Q&A with mingling (8:30pm onwards, wrapping by 9:30pm).
Your ticket includes dinner courtesy of East West, Smoke and Lime, and collaborating chefs, plus all materials needed to create your piece. You're welcome to bring your own items to stitch—tote bags, jackets, towels, jeans, or anything else. No textile experience is required, and the team will help with threading and accommodate individual abilities.
