Join Professor Stephen Machin for the Stone Centre Annual Public Lecture exploring the shifting landscape of wage inequality in modern Britain. His talk, "What's different about wage inequality today?", examines how labour market inequality has transformed over recent decades—from the rapid increases of the 1980s and 1990s to today's more complex picture.
The lecture delves into how the minimum wage has supported the lowest earners while wages above it have stalled, how working patterns have grown more precarious, and how family income composition has shifted. Machin will connect these trends to pressing contemporary issues including the cost-of-living crisis, housing affordability, and ongoing debates around zero-hour contracts, stamp duty, and wealth taxes.
The session will be chaired by Delphine Strauss (Financial Times) with respondent Jeevun Sandher MP, followed by Q&A and a reception.
