A celebratory evening honouring John Berger (1926-2017) on what would have been his 100th birthday. Berger was a towering cultural figure - writer, novelist, broadcaster, poet, filmmaker and artist whose prolific output across more than sixty books examined the power of images, challenged social injustice, and championed the overlooked and marginalised. His work transcended borders and continues to influence readers and thinkers worldwide.
This tribute brings together a remarkable constellation of artists, writers, activists, family and friends to share how Berger's thinking has shaped them. The evening unfolds in two parts, combining live contributions, film and audio clips, and on-stage readings of Berger's own words performed by actors Khalid Abdalla and Juliet Stevenson. Contributors include Lisa Appignanesi, Teju Cole, Sally Potter, Ali Smith, Simon McBurney and many others, with appearances in person, via sound and image. The event is curated and hosted by Gareth Evans, with an interval midway through.
