Join a hands-on earthworm survey day in two neighbouring London parks, contributing real data to the National Earthworm Recording Scheme. You'll learn practical surveying methods including soil pit sampling, microhabitat exploration, and specimen collection and preservation, all while building species occurrence records that support conservation efforts and site management.
Led by Keiron Derek Brown, who has run the National Earthworm Recording Scheme since 2014 and delivered over 100 training events, this day welcomes adults of all experience levels. No prior knowledge is needed — all techniques will be taught on site. The two parks — South Park and nearby Hurlingham Park in Hammersmith and Fulham — offer diverse habitats including ponds, hedges, wildflower areas, grassland and deadwood, making them ideal for earthworm surveying. You'll spend the full day outdoors collecting environmental and ecological data alongside fellow nature enthusiasts from varied backgrounds.
