An evening exploring the remarkable life and creative practice of Derek Jarman, the pioneering artist, filmmaker and gardener. Jane Palm-Gold, an artist, curator and historian based in St Giles, traces Jarman's journey from his home in Phoenix House on the Charing Cross Road—where he moved in July 1979 from Butler's Wharf—through his formative years in Soho to his eventual relocation to Prospect Cottage in Dungeness. The talk examines his work during this transformative period, his hidden urban garden, and the personal circumstances that led him to the Kent coast.
Jane Palm-Gold curated the acclaimed exhibition Derek Jarman: From Soho to the Fifth Continent (Farsight Gallery and Rye Arts Festival, 2024), which drew sold-out audiences. A twice-graduate of the Royal College of Art, her scholarship on London's cultural history is widely recognised, and her own artistic work has appeared on BBC Radio London, BBC London News, and in publications including the Guardian and Independent.
The event runs from 7:00pm for approximately one hour, with an optional social gathering afterwards.
