An in-depth public discussion exploring the intersection of psychoanalysis and politics through the lens of clinical case studies. Psychoanalysts Jamieson Webster and Patricia Gherovici, joined by novelist and critic Rachel Connolly, examine how the political enters the consulting room and shapes our relationships to power, identity, and normativity. Drawing on historic cases that confront issues of homosexuality, race, colonial violence, and gender identity, they argue for psychoanalysis as a tool for understanding our political selves rather than dismissing it as irrelevant or purely ideological.
Webster is author of On Breathing, Disorganization & Sex, and Conversion Disorder, and teaches at the New School for Social Research. Gherovici is a psychoanalytic supervisor and award-winning clinician whose books include Transgender Psychoanalysis: A Lacanian Perspective on Sexual Difference and Bodies to Wear. Connolly is a novelist and critic whose debut novel Lazy City won the Betty Trask Award.
The event concludes with audience Q&A and book signing.
