Katie McGowan's solo exhibition investigates the intricate connection between women and water through six years of artistic investigation into femininity, fluidity and change. As the creator of Wavism, McGowan has developed a distinctive visual approach using flowing oil paint waves to explore the female form beyond its physical appearance.
Across hundreds of paintings and drawings, the artist examines how water can convey experiences that physical anatomy cannot - namely, what it feels like to inhabit a female body. Rather than serving as mere background, water here merges with the figure itself. The distinction between body and surroundings blurs, with waves functioning as both compositional element and emotional expression. They capture the cyclical, contradictory and fluid nature of femininity - balancing softness with strength, abstraction with figuration, and physical sensation with emotional resonance.
The exhibition presents the culmination of McGowan's extended creative journey, offering insight into her evolving artistic language and the philosophical ideas underpinning these works.
