Join acclaimed writer and critic Jacqueline Rose for the launch of her debut novel, Two Women, at the Freud Museum. Rose will discuss the book in conversation with fellow writer and critic Devorah Baum, exploring how psychoanalysis influences the creative process, the interplay between biography and fiction, and fiction's capacity to reshape our understanding of history and identity.
Two Women weaves together the lives of Edith Stein—a German-Jewish philosopher, Catholic convert and saint—and Gillian Rose, a philosopher of German-Jewish thought and Rose's own sister. Through luminous intertwining of fact and imagination, the novel traces the parallels and distances between these two remarkable twentieth-century figures, while investigating the depths of love, loss, belonging, intellect, faith and courage.
Jacqueline Rose is an internationally recognised feminist critic, co-director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities, and a frequent contributor to major publications including the London Review of Books and New York Review of Books. She is the 2026 PEN Harold Pinter Prize recipient. Devorah Baum is Professor of English Literature at the University of Southampton and a contributor to leading newspapers and magazines.
