Tom McCarthy presents his novel The Rhyl Poster in conversation with Eyal Weizman at this author event. The novel follows Benjamin Stanton, a decorated Gulf War veteran and legal theorist at Europe's highest court, whose life unravels after meeting the mysterious Pirotti. Drawn into a world of altered consciousness through mysterious pills, Stanton begins leaking classified documents while descending into hallucinatory visions haunted by a violent incident from his past in Iraq. Rather than drafting a crucial landmark ruling, he instead creates an enormous, enigmatic 'confession' composed of patterns, markings and encoded messages—a work with the potential to dismantle the carefully constructed world around him.
McCarthy's internationally acclaimed fiction has been adapted for cinema, theatre and radio, with his novels C and Satin Island both shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Weizman is founder and director of Forensic Architecture and Professor of Spatial and Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, bringing distinctive expertise to discussions of violence, investigation and visual culture. The event takes place at Foyles Charing Cross Road, Level 6 Auditorium.
