Marking the 550th anniversary of William Caxton establishing his printing press near Westminster Abbey, historians Matthew Payne and Thomas Penn examine the significance of his location and the conditions that allowed his venture to thrive. The speakers trace how Caxton built a network of professional relationships extending from his immediate surroundings along the Thames to London and beyond.
Thomas Penn, author of Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England and The Brothers York: An English Tragedy, is currently writing a biography of Caxton. A specialist in the late medieval and sixteenth-century periods, he contributes regularly to publications including the Guardian and London Review of Books.
