Vermeer's paintings fascinate viewers with their luminous light and quiet interiors, yet the artist's life remains largely mysterious. In this two-hour masterclass, renowned art historian and broadcaster Andrew Graham-Dixon opens up the Dutch master's greatest works, examining their composition, symbolism, technique and atmosphere while revealing details often overlooked.
Drawing on groundbreaking research for his book Vermeer: A Life Lost and Found (named The Times Art Book of the Year 2025), Andrew situates Vermeer's paintings within the religious, political and social upheavals of seventeenth-century Holland. Since the book's original publication, previously unknown documents have emerged, and Andrew will explore this new evidence that reshapes our understanding of the painter's life and work.
Every ticket includes a copy of the new paperback edition of the book. The masterclass takes place in the historic Great Hall at Barts North Wing.
