Hear the St Margaret's Consort of Westminster Abbey celebrate the music of Henry Purcell, the celebrated organist and composer of Westminster Abbey from 1679 to 1695. Known after his early death as the "Orpheus Britannicus", Purcell mastered every musical genre of his era, leaving a legacy of expressive church music and vibrant works for stage.
This programme explores Purcell's finest sacred compositions alongside his dramatic vocal pieces, reframed through the later interpretations of Benjamin Britten. Britten was profoundly influenced by Purcell and created imaginative piano accompaniments for several of the older composer's solo songs - a connection particularly resonant two weeks before the 50th anniversary of Britten's death.
The St Margaret's Consort provides choral music for high-profile services in this historic church, closely linked to Parliament. The current ensemble continues a choral tradition dating back to the church's consecration in 1523, and has been led by conductors including Richard Hickox and Simon Over. Greg Morris, the current Director of Music, conducts and also serves as Musical Director of Collegium Musicum of London.
