Keep the samurai sword tradition alive at the Niten Institute in London. Students train through traditional katas and real combat (kenjutsu), working through many stances and techniques in the same way samurai did centuries ago.
The Institute teaches several classical schools, including Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo (made famous by the graphic novel Lone Wolf and Cub), Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu (said to be around 700 years old), Shindo Muso Ryu Jojutsu and Kasumi Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu. The main focus is Niten Ichi Ryu, the two-sword techniques developed by the samurai Miyamoto Musashi, who was undefeated in more than 60 duels against the most skilled swordsmen of his time.
The Experimental Class is a condensed introduction to the Dojo's sword techniques. Over a two-hour session with a Senior Dojo Coordinator, you learn three advanced Niten Ichi Ryu katas created by Musashi himself (long sword, short sword and two swords), practise basic kenjutsu strikes, and put on armour to apply your technique in a real combat setting. The session also includes a weekly "Golden Moments" talk on samurai philosophy and how to apply its values in everyday life. Equipment (shinai, bokuto and bogu) is included in the ticket price.
