Explore the history of Smithfield and Clerkenwell, two areas that were once beyond the authority of the City of London. Smithfield started out as a smooth field used for jousting, later became a place of execution for religious martyrs, and was where William Wallace was hanged, drawn and quartered in 1305.
Along the way you will see a beautiful old church, a meat market around 900 years old that is being taken over by the Museum of London, and a couple of former monasteries. The route also goes in search of the original Clerk's Well and takes in a bit of Chancery Lane.
