An enchanting evening of festive music celebrates one of Britain's greatest 20th-century composers through two of his most beloved choral masterworks. The St Margaret's Choristers and Consort present A Ceremony of Carols, Britten's exquisite miniatures for treble voices and harp that weave the Christmas story into a series of dramatic and lyrical tableaux, framed by plainsong processional and recessional.
The young choristers will be joined by the full St Margaret's Consort for A Boy was Born, a virtuosic set of variations on an original theme for mixed voices. Performed 50 years to the day after Britten's death, this concert offers a moving tribute to his influence and legacy, showcasing the St Margaret's Choristers — 24 girls aged 11-17 from across London who have quickly become integral to Westminster Abbey's musical life.
Set in the atmospheric interior of St Margaret's Church beside the Christmas Tree, the concert opens its doors at 18:10 with the performance beginning at 18:30.
