A landmark conversation exploring punk's 50-year history through the lens of Black music and British culture. Broadcaster Richie Brave brings together musicians, writers and cultural commentators to examine how reggae, ska, dub, soul, funk and Caribbean sound-system culture shaped the emergence of punk in 1970s Britain.
The panel features Vivien Goldman, journalist and musician who documented punk-reggae connections in the 1970s; Stephanie Phillips, guitarist with Black feminist punk band Big Joanie and commentator on race and alternative music; and Mykaell S. Riley, founding member of Steel Pulse and Director of the Black Music Research Unit, who curated the British Library's Beyond the Bassline exhibition. Together they'll explore Black British youth culture, sound systems, resistance and the profound influence of Black culture on punk's music, fashion, art and visual language.
Suitable for anyone interested in music history, cultural studies or punk, whether or not you experienced the era firsthand. All proceeds go to the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust.
