The first and most dramatic of St Bride's Advent events, this carol service opens in darkness and gradually moves into light as readings and music unfold the hopeful message of Christmas. The programme blends new and familiar repertoire, with anthems and hymns that invite reflection on the needs of the world and the meaning of Christ's coming.
The service begins with Richard Lloyd's evocative setting of "Drop down, ye heavens from above", opened by a soprano soloist high in the Minstrel's Gallery. Later, the choir sings Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria" for double choir, rich in harmony. The closing sequence is performed from the altar steps and presents two settings of "Ave virgo sanctissima": one by the Spanish Renaissance composer Francisco Guerrero and one by the contemporary British composer Lucy Walker.
The service is free to attend and open to all, with no ticket needed. A voluntary collection is taken afterwards, and a donation of £15 per person is suggested. St Bride's receives no state funding, so visitor support is essential.
