This screening and conversation explores Nubia Way, a pioneering housing co-operative built in 1990s Downham by Fusions Jameen, London's first Black-led housing initiative. The documentary follows the story of self-builders who constructed their homes using Walter Segal's principles whilst securing affordable long-term rents - a powerful act of resistance against housing discrimination faced by Black British communities.
After the film, original self-builder Tim Oshodi joins artist Abel Holsborough for a live discussion connecting Nubia Way to House for Artists, a contemporary artist residential project in Barking. Together they reflect on how collective housing models can nurture creativity, support and alternative ways of living.
The evening opens with free access to the gallery and new displays from 6pm, followed by the screening at 7pm and the in-conversation panel at 7:30pm, concluding with a private view of the Earthly Paradise exhibition.
