Sophie Treadwell's expressionist masterpiece Machinal brings the story of Helen Jones to life — a woman confined by the demands of work, home and an emotionless marriage. The drama draws inspiration from the Ruth Snyder true-crime case that captivated America in 1928, transforming one woman's struggle into a powerful exploration of modern constraint and resistance.
Directed by Finlay Glen, this production showcases Treadwell's distinctive expressionist style as Helen is drawn deeper into the machinery of life, ultimately refusing to submit. Performed by BA(Hons) Acting students and designed by BA(Hons) Theatre Practice and Production Technologies & Stage Management students at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the production is a visceral, poetic examination of obedience and rebellion.
