Join bestselling author Marlon James for an intimate evening discussing his latest novel, The Disappearers – a Booker Prize-shortlisted work that the New York Times hailed as the "Novel of the Decade, if Not the Century". James is the author of the Booker Prize-winning A Brief History of Seven Killings and multiple acclaimed novels including Black Leopard, Red Wolf and Moon Witch, Spider King.
The Disappearers returns to the Jamaica of his earlier masterpiece, following eight gay men who meet in Kingston in 1988 to perform in an openly queer play – a dangerous act in a society hostile to their existence. The novel is both an unflinching examination of hatred and prejudice, and a deeply human story of acceptance and resilience.
Doors open at 6.30pm, with the event starting at 7pm. The venue is the stunning Grade 2*-listed St Giles' Church in Camberwell.
