Historian and broadcaster Alice Loxton discusses her latest book, A History of Britain in 21 Paintings, in conversation with rare book expert and collector Tom W. Ayling. The event celebrates the launch of Loxton's fourth book, which explores Britain's past through landmark artworks—from L.S. Lowry's social scenes and the iconic 'Rainbow Portrait' of Elizabeth I to Millais' 'Ophelia' and medieval church wall art.
Loxton examines each painting from the viewer's perspective, revealing what they convey about their historical moment and what real-life inspiration shaped them. The book challenges familiar myths while uncovering the lives of ordinary people and the cultural shifts these works reflected and inspired. Loxton is an accomplished television presenter appearing regularly on History Hit, Channel 4 and the BBC, and has written acclaimed works including UPROAR: Scandal, Satire and Printmakers in Georgian London and Eighteen and Eleanor. Ayling, founder of Tom W. Ayling Rare Books and Manuscripts, brings his passion for literature and book collecting to the conversation.
A book and ticket option is available, which includes a copy of A History of Britain in 21 Paintings to collect on the night.
